In character he was gentle, reverent, and humble; his face never showed joy or anger. His precept observance was pure and lucid; he instructed and transformed others without fatigue, and in inquiring of the worthy and seeking the good, he always acted as though he had not yet had enough. Whenever monks or laypeople came to the mountain to pay homage, he would expound the Dharma to guide and encourage them, using this in place of sumptuous delicacies. From the time he went forth from the household until his old age, pungent roots, wine, fresh meat, and domestic animals were completely and permanently renounced. For more than thirty years, his feet did not leave his room. Day and night he practiced dhyāna, constantly recited the Prajñā-sūtra, and in the six periods of repentance and homage, he was always foremost among the assembly. On the fifteenth day of the intercalary eighth month in the seventeenth year of the Tianjian era of the Liang, he died at his mountain abode, aged seventy-nine.
