> Shi Sengrao was a man from Jiankang. He left home and resided at Baima Temple. He was skilled in letter writing and various arts, but was especially renowned for his chanting voice, being widely celebrated during the reigns of Emperors Wu and Wen of the Song. His resonant melodies were relaxed and leisurely, harmonious, elegant, mournful, and clear, standing shoulder to shoulder with Daozong. Zong was skilled in the three Benqi and the Danuo. Whenever he raised a pure Sanskrit chant, both monastics and laity were captivated. The temple had a Prajñā Terrace, and Rao often circumambulated it while chanting in Sanskrit as an offering. When passersby heard it, none failed to stop their carriages, linger, snap their fingers, and praise the Buddha. He died in the second year of the Daming era of the Song at the age of eighty-six.
