> Shi Huiyuan was a man of Hebei. By nature he was benevolent; neither joy nor anger showed in his countenance. He constantly practiced dhyāna, recited sūtras, and exhorted others to perform meritorious deeds, taking these as his regular vocation. At the beginning of the Taiyuan era of the Jin, he founded a temple on Mount Ping in Wuling, where there were more than twenty monks who ate vegetables, lived in secluded retirement, and permanently cut off the paths of worldly men. He died in the fourteenth year of the Taiyuan era. After his death, someone entered the foot of Mount Wudang and saw him with a very serene and joyful demeanor; he sent word to the temple monks not to let the monastic duties fall into neglect. From then on, inside the temple, the sound of a stone chime was constantly heard from the sky at the appropriate times; following it, they assembled the community without ever missing the hour. The śramaṇa Zhu Huizhi resided there. Huizhi was austere and observed strict precepts; later, he abstained from grains, consumed only pine and cypress, and thereupon climbed the mountain and underwent liberation like a cicada shedding its shell.
