> Later, hearing that among the mountains and waters east of the Yangtze, Shan county was praised as wonderful, he leisurely walked to Dong'ou, gazed far toward Wu and Sheng, and dwelt at the foot of Shicheng Mountain, which is the present-day Yuanhua Temple. People of the time compared his vigor and character to Yu Yuangui \[Yu Liang\], and Sun Chuo in his 'Treatise on Men of the Way and Worthies' (Daoxian lun) compared him to Ruan Sizong \[Ruan Ji\], saying: 'Master Lan forgot his body, and his exalted and subtle deeds are almost on par with the Perfected Person; Ruan the Infantry Commandant, proud, solitary, and standing above the herd, is also a peer of Lan.' After dwelling in Shan for a short time, he suddenly sighed, saying: 'Although the Great Dharma flourishes, many scripture texts and doctrines are lacking; if I could hear the complete teaching just once, I could die content that evening.' He thereupon traveled far to the Western Regions to seek what had not been heard. When he arrived in Jiaozhou, he fell ill and died in Xianglin. The śramaṇa Zhi Dun later erected an image and composed a eulogy, saying: 'Master Yu transcended the world, comprehending the mysterious purport; retiring happily to mountains and marshes, he tamed tigers and rhinos.' A separate biography says: 'Lan also moved a dry spring to gush forth water, an event identical to that of Zhu Fahu.' This is not yet certain.
