> Dao'an had earlier heard that Kumārajīva was in the western lands, and longed to analyze and discuss the scriptures together with him, frequently urging Fu Jian to fetch him. Kumārajīva also heard of Dao'an's reputation from afar, considered him a sage of the East, and constantly bowed to him in reverence from a distance. Earlier, when Dao'an was born, he had on his left arm a piece of skin about an inch wide attached to the arm, which could be slid up and down with the hand, only it could not be taken past his wrist; on the outside of his elbow there was also a square piece of flesh with clear writing on it, so the people of his day called him the "Hand-Sealed Bodhisattva." Sixteen years after Dao'an passed away, Master Kumārajīva finally arrived; Kumārajīva deeply regretted that they could not meet, and his sorrow was boundless.
