> Shi Tanyi, whose secular surname was Yao, was of Qiang descent, though some say he was from Jizhou. At the age of sixteen he left the household and served Master Dao'an as his teacher. From his youth he was renowned for his observance of the vinaya; his learning was thoroughly versed in the Tripiṭaka, and he was held in high esteem by his fellow disciples. Once when he traveled through Shu Commandery, the regional inspector Mao Qu deeply revered him, arranged the midday meal for him, and personally served him. Seeing that Yi found a grain of unhusked rice in his meal and picked it out to eat it first, Qu secretly respected him with wonder, knowing that he would never betray the gifts of faith. When \[Qu\] later presented him with a thousand hu of rice, Yi accepted it and distributed it in charity.
