> Kumārajīva replied with a letter, saying: 'Kumārajīva makes obeisance. Not having spoken face to face, and separated by written expressions, the path guiding our minds does not connect, and the condition for obtaining understanding is severed. From what the couriers brought, I have roughly learned of your moral influence; how have you been lately? Having fully heard of one aspect, one can encompass a hundred. A sūtra says: In the final period, there will be a Dharma-protecting bodhisattva in the east. Exert yourself, benevolent one, and properly propagate this matter! As for wealth, there are five provisions: merit, precepts, broad learning, eloquence, and deep wisdom. He who combines them will have a flourishing Way; he who lacks them will suffer doubt and stagnation. You, benevolent one, possess them all. The reason I send my mind to establish friendly ties and convey my thoughts through translation—how could it exhaust them? I merely roughly reciprocate your incoming intention. You took the trouble to send cut cloth for a monastic robe, wishing me to wear it when ascending the Dharma seat; I shall comply with your intention, but only feel ashamed that the person does not match the object. I now send a brass twin-spouted water vessel that I regularly use, which may be counted among Dharma objects, and also present a stanza of verses, saying:
> "Having already abandoned defiled pleasures,
> has the mind attained good control or not?
> If it has attained freedom from scattering,
> has it penetrated deeply into the true mark or not?
> Within the mark of ultimate emptiness,
> its mind finds nothing to take pleasure in.
> If one delights in the wisdom of dhyāna,
> this nature of phenomena lacks illumination.
> Illusory, deceitful, and equally without reality,
> it is also no resting place for the mind.
> Whatever Dharma you have attained,
> kindly deign to show its essentials."'
