> At that time, the śramaṇa Shi Dao'an had established a temple on Mount Heng in Taihang to propagate the Dharma of Images, and his renown was widely celebrated; Yuan thereupon went to join him. At their very first meeting, he showed the utmost respect, regarding Dao'an as 'truly my master'. Later, hearing Dao'an lecture on the Prajñā-sūtra, he was suddenly awakened and sighed, saying: 'Confucianism, Daoism, and the Nine Schools are all mere chaff and husks!' He and his younger brother Huichi then cast off their hairpins, shaved their heads, and committed their lives to receive his teachings.
