> This place was very far from water; Yuan struck the ground with his staff and said: 'If this place is suitable for dwelling, let the decaying soil bring forth a spring.' As soon as he finished speaking, clear water gushed forth, eventually becoming a stream. A short time later, Xunyang suffered a severe drought; Yuan went to the pool's side to read the Sūtra of the Ocean Dragon King. Suddenly a giant serpent rose from the pool into the sky, and in a moment heavy rain fell, resulting in an abundant harvest that year; hence the hermitage was named Longquan Temple.
