> After \[Kumāra\]jīva passed away, \[Hui\]guan went south to Jingzhou. Sima Xiuzhi, the regional inspector of the province, respected him deeply and founded Gaokui Temple there for him, causing more than half of the people of Jing and Chu to turn away from heterodoxy and return to correctness. When Emperor Wu of the Song campaigned south against Xiuzhi and arrived in Jiangling, he met Guan, treated him with total devotion, and was as cordial as if they were old acquaintances. He then ordered him to accompany the General of the West Central \[Army\], who was Emperor Wen. Soon after, he returned to the capital and stayed at Daochang Temple. Since Guan was wonderfully adept in Buddhist principles, had thoroughly explored Laozi and Zhuangzi, was also well versed in the Daśādhyāya-vinaya, and had drawn extensively from various schools, those who sought the Dharma and asked about the Way left his seats unfilled not a single day. In the beginning of the Yuanjia era, on the Shangsi festival in the third month, the imperial carriage visited the Winding Waters for a banquet, and \[the Emperor\] ordered Guan to compose poems with the court officials. Guan presented his first from his seat; its literary style was pure and graceful, and its content suited the occasion. Wang Sengda of Langye and He Shangzhi of Lujiang both conveyed their sincerity through refined conversation, forging an appreciation beyond the dust \[of the world\].
