> Daoyuan's disciple Huilin, originally surnamed Liu, was a native of Qin Commandery. He was skilled in various sūtras as well as Zhuangzi and Laozi; he was humorous and fond of laughing, and was adept at literary composition, so his collected works comprised ten fascicles. However, by nature he was arrogant and conceited, boasting considerably of himself. Daoyuan once went to visit Fu Liang; \[Hui\]lin was already seated there, and when Daoyuan arrived, \[Hui\]lin did not pay him respect. Daoyuan's anger showed on his face, so \[Fu\] Liang punished \[Hui\]lin with twenty lashes of the rod. Emperor Shizu of Song held \[Hui\]lin in high esteem and would invite him in, often seating him on a couch of his own; Yan Yanzhi frequently ridiculed this, which invariably displeased the emperor. Later \[Hui\]lin composed the Baihei lun (Discourse on White and Black), which diverged from Buddhist principles. He Chengtian, the Administrator of Hengyang, was intimately close with \[Hui\]lin and they warmly extolled each other; \[He\] composed the Daxing lun (Discourse on Penetrating Nature), and both of them remained rigidly confined to a one-sided view, reviling and rebuking the Śākya teaching. Yan Yanzhi and Zong Bing examined and refuted their two discourses, each writing more than ten thousand words. Having defamed his own Dharma, \[Hui\]lin was banished to Jiaozhou. What the world called 'Master Yuan seeing the hemp-seed star' referred to this person.
