> Because Ji's virtue covered the Three Wu regions and his fame spread across the realm, he was appointed by imperial order as monastic rector, placed in charge of ten cities. This was the beginning of monastic rectory (saṃghapradhāna) in the eastern lands. Thereupon, he relaxed into lecturing on the Dao and instructing in dhyāna and wisdom; those from all directions followed his manner, and the five assemblies submitted to him. Ji's nature was fierce yet gentle, his demeanor pure and serene, so that among those who belonged to his disciples, none were not awestruck. In the winter, the eleventh month, of the third year of the Jianwu era of the Qi dynasty (496 CE), he died at Chengbang Temple at the age of eighty-five.
