> Śramaṇa Huiqian was a native of Yingzhou. Fond of learning and devoted to questioning, he took pleasure in studying the Daśabhūmika-śāstra, considering it the ultimate joy of the mind. Carrying his tin staff, he traveled widely seeking out masters of high caliber. Though he examined that single work with fine care, he also possessed a broad penetration of a hundred traditions; whenever difficult points of principle arose, all the masters would provide their expositions. During the Qi dynasty, his name and reality had already spread far. Furthermore, he studied under Master \[Hui\]yuan to re-examine his former studies, without needing to be taught twice. In the course of twelve years, he mastered both the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra and the Bodhisattvabhūmi, and was qualified to lecture on both. When the Qi fell and the Dharma was destroyed, he fled south to the Chen state. When the Great Sui inaugurated a new mandate, he returned to his home region. Passing through Luoyang, he again attached himself to Yuan; his old training and new knowledge fully filled his breast. When Yuan entered the Pass, Qian accompanied him and arrived, residing at Da Xingshan Temple and taking wide dissemination as his duty. In the seventeenth year of Kaihuang, when the five assemblies were established by imperial edict, Qian was invited to be head of the Daśabhūmika congregation, residing at Baoguang Temple, where he lectured continuously and expounded the various doctrinal classes. In the second year of Renshou, an imperial edict ordered him to escort relics to Hongbo Temple in his native district. When they arrived and dug a foundation six feet into the earth, a purple light was miraculously emitted, surging up toward the stūpa, resembling flames, like the ornaments worn by golden statues. Furthermore, characters appeared upon the earth in clear black script, reading, "Stūpa of the Wheel-Turning King Buddha." Seeing these miraculous signs, all rejoiced at such a rare encounter. In the fourth year of Renshou, he again built a stūpa at Anhe Temple in Haizhou; digging five feet deep, they found white earth, whiter than powder, filling the entire pit. Digging eight feet deeper, within the white earth they obtained a piece of white jade, more than a foot square, of incomparable luster. On the morning when the relics were to be enshrined, a great light was emitted, illuminating the city walls, red like fire. When the relics emerged from the jar, they divided into six grains, displaying rare marvels, so that the crowd was filled with sighing astonishment. Later, Qian frequently opened lectures on the Daśabhūmika-śāstra; in the capital, few could rival him. When Da Chanding was established, he was summoned to reside there. Toward the end of Wude, he passed away at his dwelling at the age of seventy-nine. After Qian's demise, lectures on the Daśabhūmika-śāstra ceased to be heard in the region within the Pass. That the Way is magnified by people is verified here. Those who apply their minds may truly be encouraged by this.
