> Shi Huiyu, whose secular surname was Cen, was orphaned and destitute in his youth; at three years old both parents passed away, and he was raised by his maternal uncle. At five, he accompanied his maternal grandfather to Changsha Temple to listen \[to sermons\]. Seeing the Buddha, he wept, longing for him, and refused to return home. He then took up residence there as a disciple of Master Jiuku of the temple. He was made to chant the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, and within fifty days he became fluent in the entire text. Later, he listened to the Three Treatises and the Pañcaviṃśati, mirroring their central doctrines; wherever he went through texts, his contemplative function was bright and precise. Meeting with difficulties, he entered Mount Yuquan. Beside the temple was a spring, and next to it he built a thatched hut, sitting in tranquility within it for twenty-three years, never once leaving even briefly. The purity of his contemplative mind could not be described in words. The spring deity offered provisions to him, occasionally being seen or heard. A black snake, some twenty feet long, appeared and disappeared, bearing the appearance of guarding him. Although gangs of bandits came, none dared to draw near. There was an old bandit named Zhang Hega, uniquely fierce and fearless, who led ten bandits with two swords strapped to his body, intending to kill this snake. Two hundred paces away, the snake opened its eyes and emitted light; the band of bandits all collapsed. Two days later, Yu realized it and went to rescue them; seven men were already dead. The snake followed Yu's footsteps. When he had finished chanting the Mahāvidyā-mantra of the Pañcaviṃśati, the three men revived. Thereupon, hearing of his renown, people from near and far came to make abundant offerings and donations. In the tenth year of the Zhenguan reign, the clergy and laity of Jingzhou invited him to come out to Shengjue Temple to lecture on the Three Treatises and the Pañcaviṃśati, enlightening those who had not yet heard, whereby the Buddha-Dharma flourished. On the twenty-third day of the seventh month in the fourteenth year, the entire temple simultaneously saw a cluster of stars fall into a well, not understanding the cause. On the seventeenth day of the eighth month, while lecturing on the Pañcaviṃśati, before finishing the passage on rebirth \[in the Pure Land\], he held a ruyi sceptre in hand and died on his seat. His age was seventy-nine.
