> Shi Zhikai, whose secular surname was Feng, was a native of Danyang. His father died early. At six years of age, he listened to Master Jizang lecture on the burning house chapter of the Lotus Sūtra. That night he told his mother: "The burning house explained in the sūtra is merely my own body. If I am the burning house, I ought to burn others. Since I do not burn them, it is clear there is no self." Through the whole night until dawn, he went to Jizang to go forth from the household life. His physical complexion was dark, so he was called "Crow Kai." At age thirteen, when recapping Jizang's sūtras and treatises, he was unrestrained and thoroughly penetrative, never confined by rigid rules in his discourse. He accompanied Jizang to Jiaxiang and other temples in Kuaiji; among the prominent disciples, none dared surpass him. When Jizang entered the capital, he immediately returned to Jinglin, gathering disciples to lecture constantly. In the seventh year of the Wude reign, he set up lectures in Shan County, with five hundred students attending. In the first year of the Zhenguan reign, he went to the Xiaolongquan Temple in Yuyao County, constantly lecturing on the Three Treatises, the Pañcaviṃśati, and other sūtras. He vowed never to step outside the temple, his ribs never touching a mat, accepting no donations other than those of the saṅgha itself. Behind the Buddha hall, a pool suddenly appeared; he then said: "Merely drinking from this pool will suffice until my death." By nature he was compassionate and benevolent, yet his speech was extremely fierce and harsh. At that time, it was common custom in Yue to abandon puppies; Kai heard of this, pitied them, and had them collected, constantly raising thirty to fifty of them, sharing his felt blankets and bedding without minding the filth. In the nineteenth year, the Area Commander of Qi invited him out to Jiaxiang to lecture on the Three Treatises. More than eight hundred doctrinal scholars from the four directions, along with officials and commoners of all ranks, gathered in accordance with the seasons, making it a glorious occasion. For over a hundred days, he debated ten people daily, his responses aloof and fluent, dispelling all blockages without stagnation. When he first departed Longquan, the small pool immediately dried up. Kai heard of this and sighed: "The pool is dried and food is gone; I will not return." On the twenty-eighth day of the seventh month in the twentieth year, he ascended the seat as usual, held a ruyi sceptre in his hand, and remained silent without speaking; on approaching to inspect him, he had already passed away. They sent him sitting cross-legged to Mount Dayu, making offerings for seven days, during which an extraordinary fragrance was constantly present. The prefect examined it personally and gave rise to deep, firm faith; he then erected a seven-story stupa to commemorate his virtue.
