> Shi Tanyin, whose secular surname was Shi, was a native of Henai. In his youth he grew weary of the dust of the mundane world and early on frequented Buddhist monasteries, reverently observing the precepts and restrictions, and chanting and studying the various sūtras, totaling three hundred thousand words, reciting them day and night as his constant practice. When he reached full age and received the full ordination, he took refuge under Daofu and listened to the Vinaya corpus; exerting himself for a long time, his analysis grew increasingly profound. Later, he sought further refined essentials from Master Guang, being influenced and transformed, and ultimately became a major disciple of Guang's school. He then strode preeminent through the capital Ye, awakening the regions of Yan and Zhao in the north. Hou Jing, the Regional Inspector of Dingzhou, revered him like a divine immortal, built a monastery for him, invited him to dwell there, and provided him with offerings. Later, Yin returned to the banks of the Zhang River to propagate these teachings. Pushe Gao Longzhi treated him with extraordinary honors; Hou Jing, as Regional Commissioner, also built the Dayan Monastery for him east of Ye, inviting him again to reside there. He widely broadcast the Vinaya school, and the five assemblies looked up to him as a master. When he made decisions following their inquiries, his textual and doctrinal interpretations were elegant and correct. At that time, there was the Vinaya-upholding śramaṇa Daole, who combined practice and understanding, matching him in public reputation; his temperament was grand and unrestrained, sometimes considered to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with him. Thus a saying in Ye went: 'For clarity and conciseness in the Vinaya school, there are only Yin and Le.' Such was their esteem in the world. Yet Yin by nature enjoyed wandering alone and did not keep disciples. He had not a single foot of wealth stored, and kept his shoulders bare throughout his life; his robes and bowl were constantly with him, truly matching the wings of a bird. In turning his gaze and spinning his body, he took the elephant's turn as his model. In comprehending and upholding the Vinaya, he was the only person of his time. At the age of sixty-three, he passed away at Dajue Monastery in the city of Ye. He composed a commentary (chao) in four fascicles. His disciples who became accomplished numbered more than ten, all taking his path as their model. At that time, there was Vinaya Master Hongli, whose refined spirit stood alone and whose diction was rigorous and correct; whenever he took part in disputations, rarely did his opponents not lose their chariot wheels. He composed a commentary in two fascicles, which was kept secret together with Yin's work. Later, the śramaṇa Zhishou expounded and expanded its expressions and meanings, reorganizing the outline and combining them into four fascicles, which was recited everywhere.
