> Shi Daocheng, whose courtesy name was Mingfan, had the secular surname Tao and was a native of Danyang. His grandfather Dan was General Who Beckons from Afar and Grand Protector of Yongjia under the Qi; his father Qian was General of Chaste Prowess and Magistrate of Shangyu under the Liang. Cheng entered the Way in his youth and resided at Chongxuan Monastery in Yongjia, serving Dharmabhāṇaka Shi as his disciple. His appearance was handsome and magnificent, his remarkable demeanor surpassing the multitude; his peers called him a child prodigy. After receiving the full precepts, his learning exceeded that of his fellows. At the beginning of the Datong era, he went to dwell in the capital, studying under the śramaṇa Zhiwen, the Great Vinaya Director of Fengcheng Monastery. Having gone through the Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya only twice, before he had reached the age of thirty, he opened his own lecture platform. In the Abhidharma of the Sarvāstivāda, as soon as his mind was touched by it, he was enlightened; without needing to double his efforts, hearing one point he understood ten. For this reason, the elders of the capital all proclaimed that the youth was formidable. He lectured on the Daśabhāṇavāra-vinaya, the Bodhisattva Precepts, the Pañcaviṃśatisāhasrikā-prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, the Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra, and other sūtras and vinayas one hundred and forty times. He also lectured on the Guanyin Sūtra three times in a single day. He composed thirty-six fascicles of commentaries on the root text of the Vinaya, the karmans, and various sūtras. As for the tree of his intellect and the flowers of his heart, their radiance grew ever brighter like the morning sun; when he analyzed principles and resolved doubts, his listeners forgot their fatigue. His students Huizang, Faxiang, and others traveled abroad lecturing and explaining, keeping the wheel of the Dharma perpetually turning; the later flame transmitted from him brought immense benefit. All of them subsisted on vegetarian food to purify themselves, kept the jewel of the precepts in their hearts, maintained keen discernment, and kept deep dhyāna in their thoughts. In addition, they devoutly repented at the six periods of the day, and during the leisure of the 'three remainders,' they scoured literature and history, desiring that there be nothing worth knowing they could not do. His temperament was serene and composed, his deportment completely in accord with proper standards; as a model for gods and men, he rarely had an equal. His speech was gentle and pleasant, and he never crossed others. Later he showed signs of illness for more than ten days, yet he still persisted in lecturing. On the fifth day of the fifth month of the nineteenth year of the Kaihuang era, his spirit departed at Xingyan Monastery at the age of sixty-eight. In his final moments, he did nothing but recite the Buddha's name; his limbs were soft and warm, and his hands were clearly joined in añjali. On the eighth day of that month, he was interred on the south mountain of Fengcheng Monastery. The funerary inscription was composed by the monk Huicong of Gaozuo Monastery.
