> Śramaṇa Juelang, whose secular surname is unknown, was a native of Hedong. He resided at the Da Xingshan Monastery. He was illuminated in the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya and the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra; his spirit and character towered above others, and his voice and appearance moved living beings. When he walked through the streets and alleys, rarely did anyone fail to gaze at him. In the fourth year of the Renshou era, an imperial decree ordered him to escort relics to the Juecheng Monastery in Jiangzhou. When he first arrived at the administrative seat, they were displayed to monastics and laypeople; they welled up from a golden jar and divided into seven portions, the light shining clear to the outside. Digging the foundation two zhang deep, they obtained half a sheng of millet. Moreover, a yellow sparrow was spiritually moved to fly close to people with no fear at all; it lingered tamely in the Buddha hall, disappearing only after a long time. Furthermore, on the cover of the stone casket, two bodhisattvas were seen sitting cross-legged on jeweled thrones, with a bhikṣuṇī before them folding her hands in deep reverence. Others saw flying immortals, three yellow sparrows, paired śāla trees, qilin, phoenixes, and other images. For three days prior to the interment, bright light was constantly emitted, confusing day and night and shining brighter than lamps. Some closed the hall and extinguished torches, yet the light grew even more radiant, overflowing beyond the dark obstacles. Monastics and laypeople were universally moved, celebrating with clamorous rejoicing. Lang reported the details in a memorial, as recorded extensively in his separate biography. At the end of the Daye era, an imperial decree appointed him director of the Da Chanding Daochang. He restrained the overbearing and powerful, who submissively turned toward his influence. Gradually moistening them with the transformation of the Tao, they held him in great veneration. Not long after, he died at his residence. At that time, there was also Śramaṇa Haicang, whose understanding and faith were firm and upright, and who revered the Vinaya office. He repeatedly lectured on the Dharmaguptaka Vinaya, but had few successors. When the Tang dynasty arose and established ten bhadantas, Cang was one of them. There was also Vinaya Master Faqiang, who originally resided at Jingfa Monastery; later, weary of vexations and entanglements, he settled south in Taihe. Living in seclusion to cultivate his aspirations, he did not mingle with the monastic assembly. Walking alone among cliffs and peaks, resting under pine groves, taking herbal elixirs to preserve his vital center, and delighting his mind with consciousness-only (vijñapti-mātra), he was truly an untrammeled bodhi-being. After his death, his remains were left exposed on the mountainside. When night came, a lamp illuminated them; when monastics and laypeople went to look, the lamp vanished, but viewed from afar, it was seen again. This continued for over two months, the light shining ever brighter.
