> Śramaṇa Lingxun was surnamed Fu and was a native of Yuyang. In his youth he entered the Way, studying the Tattvasiddhi-śāstra and the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, plumbing their profoundest depths. Moreover, he extracted an epitome of the śāstra in two fascicles, adding annotations and explanations, which circulated widely in the world. Later, abandoning the Lesser Vehicle, he revered Master Guang. Day and night he inquired into the teachings for more than ten years, fully comprehending both subtle tenets and esoteric doctrines, understanding what was obstructed and what was accessible. Although he was broadly versed in various texts, he excelled particularly in the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra and produced commentaries and notes on it. When the capital was moved to the Zhang River and Ye, he traveled throughout Yan and Zhao, his conversion extending to the fourfold assembly, distinguishing the heterodox from the orthodox. He was also skilled in calligraphy and painting and was quite fond of verse; the elegance of his literary prose was praised by his contemporaries. He had a handsome appearance, was skilled in demeanor, and his eloquence was refined and clear, never disconcerting his listeners. He initially served as National Rector (Guodu), and at the end of the Wei dynasty he served as Monastic Superintendent (Sengtong) of Bingzhou. In the early Qi dynasty, he passed away in Jinyang at the age of sixty-nine.
