> At first, he translated the Avataṃsaka-sūtra with the Khotanese Tripiṭaka Master Śikṣānanda. After the Jiushi reign era, he began translating independently. From the gengzi year \[700\] to the guimao year of the Chang'an era \[703\], at Fuxian Temple and at Ximing Temple in the western capital Yongjing, he translated such sūtras as the Golden Light Most Victorious King Sūtra, the Diamond-Cutter Prajñā\[-pāramitā\], the Maitreya Becoming a Buddha, the Single-Syllable Spell King, the King of Adornment Dhāraṇī, and the Long-Nailed Brahmacārin; such vinaya texts as the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya, the Nidānamātṛkā, the One Hundred and One Karmans, and the Compendium; such śāstras as the Jewel in Hand, the Conceptual Designation of Bases, and the Instruction on the Six Gates; as well as Nāgārjuna's Verses of Exhortation—twenty works in all. The North Indian śramaṇa Anizhenna verified the Sanskrit text and its meaning; the śramaṇas Baolun, Fuli, Huibiao, and Zhiji recorded the words and checked the text; the śramaṇas Fabao, Fazang, Degan, Shengzhuang, Shenying, Renliang, Dayi, and Cixun verified the doctrinal meaning; and Xu Guan, Assistant Instructor of the Directorate of the National Academy, supervised the project, after which the fair copies were presented to the throne. The Empress Dowager composed the Preface to the Holy Teachings and ordered it prefixed to the beginning of the scriptures.
