> Śramaṇa Huanpu: it is not known where he was from. He was endowed with a pure and refined disposition, and his nature was modest and reserved. When dwelling among uncouth and rustic folk, he treated them with vast humility and deferential respect, and the breadth of his discernment was difficult to fathom. After receiving the full precepts (upasampadā), he reviewed and investigated the sūtras and treatises. Afterwards, carrying his staff, he traveled south to Liyang, where he met Jiashan and experienced mental resonance; whenever students presented questions, he would extend his hand to lead them back, not allowing a single mechanism of teaching to fail in opening and guiding them. If there were those whom he could not awaken, he exhorted them to read the scriptures and teachings, which was also akin to the remaining style of Shenxiu and Daji.
