> The appraisal states: Master Cheng and Daocheng of Jiangzhou during the Sui shared the same name but differed in reality; which of the two takes precedence? The universal answer states: "Sui Cheng was adept in the Sarvāstivāda-vinaya, and his writings were especially numerous; Tang Cheng transmitted the Dharmaguptaka-vinaya, and his translation and lecturing were equally wondrous. However, the former's compilations awakened those lost in delusion, while the latter's translation efforts molded the pedagogical way. It is like a later flame not matching an earlier light, or an imitation jewel feeling ashamed before a genuine jewel: each had merits and shortcomings, and in practical application neither should be discarded."
