> The appraisal states: Why did monks of the Wei and Sui dynasties so frequently manifest transformations? The answer is: 'The activity of bodhisattvas adapts to categories to transform their bodies, treating supernatural powers as sport. Through this sport they bring benefit to the rulers of the world.' Someone asked: 'The Wei, Qi, Chen, and Sui were directly seen and heard by Master Xuan; why were they not included in the Continued Biographies \[of Eminent Monks\]?' The answer is: 'There were things he did not know, which were simply left out. Just as now the Great Song has unified culture and administration, and its territory is vast, wonders occur daily and it is truly difficult to know them all. Even if a certain monk existed, how could it be helped if historians did not compile his record and biographers lacked evidence? Thus it was also omitted, and what could not be recorded in time has been left for later worthy scholars.'
