> Shi Puming's place of origin is unknown; some say he was a monk from the Western Regions. Whenever he discussed the methods of Chan, he grasped its profound subtleties so that none could fathom its vast and solitary height! In the early years of the Dali era, he was invited by the people of Shouzuo County to reside in an araṇya, and students gathered like ants. Passing back and forth through the dust of the world, laypeople bowed and made offerings to him, counted by the thousands daily. Some, upon seeing his appearance just once, naturally restrained their anger and checked their desires, bore good intentions as though feeding on mulberries, and followed good while shedding evil; those counted over the years were innumerable. The Right Vice Director of the Department of State Affairs and Military Commissioner of Yicheng Army, Jia Dan—originally a banished immortal—wandered leisurely in the teachings of the Dao and had been casual toward the Buddhist teachings. Yet as soon as he met Ming, it was as if Yang Hu recognizing his old ring, or Cai Shun seeing his loving mother. Humbly lowering his mind, he invited him to reside in the prefectural temple, and the welcoming crowd emptied the outer city, leaving the alleys without inhabitants. Thereupon, he preached the Dharma for people, never growing tired despite his old age. He walked as swiftly as the wind, and his physical appearance was sprightly and robust. On the tenth day of the intercalary twelfth month in the eighth year of the Zhenyuan era, a renshen year, he gave his final instructions to his disciples and passed away peacefully in the seated posture. Some said his lifespan was three hundred years, because those aged one hundred had seen him and his facial features had never changed. In accordance with the Indian method, he was cremated, and twenty-eight grains of śarīra were collected, firm, round, and luminous. The faithful erected a pagoda in the Chan courtyard where Ming had resided, and later moved his seat beneath the pagoda. Ten years after Ming's passing, when the royal army marched west to pacify the frontiers, Chai Qing, a valiant man of Huai, went deep into the nomadic territory to reconnoiter the Xiongnu. The patrols were numerous, so he hid by day and moved by night, losing his way and unable to distinguish the circuitous path from the direct. Qing saw Ming leading ahead of him, like an old horse taking the lead. When he reached the Han fortress, \[Ming\] suddenly vanished. Returning to the prefecture, he paid homage at the pagoda, and this was transmitted far and wide.
