> The śramaṇa Shenjian, surnamed Han, was a native of Xunyang. In his childhood he was pure and tranquil, never mingling with other children. His father was an administrator in Qi'an and devoutly turned his heart to Buddhism; he once set out images in the official office and ordered monks to chant praises and hymns with uplifted voices, accompanied by sacred music. Shenjian's face beamed with joy; he followed the monks without leaving them and sought permission to leave the household. His parents had no means to stop him, so he secretly went to Mount Donglin to study under Vinaya Master Zhensu. Later, having lectured on and mastered the meaning of the Mahāparinirvāṇa-sūtra, he traveled south to Yuzhang to study under Chan Master Daji. Thereafter he dwelled on the mountain northwest of Huai'an. Previously, fierce beasts had run rampant on this mountain, mostly causing harm. Ever since Shenjian resided there, the peril from tigers ceased, and people far and near praised him. Suddenly, a man wearing a flat cap bowed before his Dharma seat with earnest respect and then vanished without a trace in an instant. Seven days later, someone with marvelous robes and a cap rose into the air before the abbot's quarters and proclaimed: 'This Great Master is a true Dharma-jewel. He opens the eyes of gods and humans, so I have come to report this.' When his disciples heard and saw this, they knew that Shenjian's attainment of the Way was lofty. In the fourth year of the Huichang era he passed away, and on the fifteenth day of the eighth month his remains were enshrined in a stupa. Whenever someone attains the Way, the earth spirits report it to the space spirits, passing the word all the way up to the Highest Heaven; this was verified in his case.
