> Śramaṇa Huishe, secular surname Xie, was a native of Kuaiji. He was a descendant of Xie An, the Grand Tutor of the Eastern Jin. Thus one knows that heroic spirits and eminent talents emerge once in a generation; how could there be an era without someone who acts as a bridge to transcend the vulgar? She was pure and plain as a person, his moral discipline solitary and lofty; he delighted in quietude and took joy in it, never lingering on fame or reputation. In the beginning of the Dali era, he met Chan Master Zhong of Mount Niutou at Zhuangyan Temple in Jinling; with a single word he knew his refuge, and was thereupon invited into the master's room and conferred the essentials of the Dharma. He embraced the transforming influence of the Way, attending upon the master for many years without shrinking from any toil. When Zhong passed away, She followed in his footsteps upon this mountain, never wandering into human settlements. With a single robe in his square-rod room, his moral integrity grew ever loftier. From that time on, those who inquired after the Way were numerous; across the four quarters, all were permeated by his influence, and during fifty years, all gathered to take refuge in his virtue. In the second year of the Changqing era, he died at the mountain cloister, at the age of eighty-two. His disciples Weiyan and others performed the full rites of a disciple for their master, built a stūpa to the northwest of the temple, and carved an inscription to record his virtue. If one examines the master's literary arts, they rivaled those of Caotang and Mount Lu, each excelling in their own generation.
