> Appraisal: In external learning, Feixi researched the Confucians and Mohists, and his brush was remarkably adept. At the time, many requested his compositions, such as the steles for National Teacher Zhong and Chujin. He hunted upon the broad plain together with Dexuan of Jinling and Master Zhou (Jiaoran) of Wuxing, and none could tell in whose hands the deer would die. However, both Masters Xuan and Xi also had the fault of being untrammelled, ornamenting things beyond reality. By contrast, Master Zhou matched the style of the Jianzhong era, comparing matters with fitting propriety. The hollow and the solid cannot indeed be spoken of in the same breath.
