> Shi Zujue, also styled Chi'an, was a son of the Yang family of Jiazhou. His intelligence manifested early, and he took special delight in the Buddhist vehicle. Thoroughly investigating the doctrines of the Xianshou school, he fully attained their subtleties. Later, by imperial order, he went forth to preside over Zhongyan in Meizhou. Scholars from the four directions gathered like clouds and rushed like rivers to arrive. Daily, at opening the hall, he taught and instructed without weariness, drawing forward later students and exhausting his compassions. The single school of Qingliang, down to the Master, may be called exceptionally flourishing. Beyond taking up the mallet, he thoroughly researched all ancient and modern books, histories, and the classics and ordinances of the various philosophers; he could recite them upon a single glance. He once compiled the Monastic History of the Northern Song, together with the Collected Explanations of the Avataṃsaka, Commentaries on the Diamond Sūtra, and Rituals for the Water and Land Retreat, all circulating in the world.
