At first he called on Yuánwù; he merely ascended the hall and was not yet able to reach its mysterious profundity. When Yuánwù was about to return to Shǔ, he sent a letter to Dàhuì saying: ‘Yán’s painting is complete; only the dotting of the eyes has not yet been done. His succession on another day will be immeasurable.’ Thereupon Dàoyán queried Dàhuì day and night, and only then attained great, thorough awakening. Thereupon his fame and brilliance spread far and wide, and both monastics and laypeople were transformed by him.
