> As for Hēluójié, his lineage is not known. He renounced household life at an early age, and recited two million words of scriptures. His nature was tranquil and profound; he maintained the precepts and rules, was graceful in deportment, and possessed handsome countenance. He practiced many dhūtas, lodging alone in mountains and wilderness. In the ninth year of the Taikang reign era of Emperor Wu of Jin, he briefly arrived in Luoyang. At that time, an epidemic was raging, and the dead followed one another in succession; Hēluójié cured them with spells, and eight or nine out of ten recovered. In the first year of the Yuankang reign era of Emperor Hui of Jin, he went west and entered a stone chamber on Mount Louzhi to practice seated meditation. This chamber was extremely far from water. The people of the time wished to dig a mountain stream for him. Hēluójié said: "There is no need to trouble you." He then used his left foot to grind against the western stone wall of the chamber. The wall sank in, burying his toes. When he withdrew his foot, water emerged from within, clear, fragrant, sweet, and delicious, never ceasing through the four seasons. Those who came to drink all had their hunger and thirst stopped and their diseases eliminated. In the eighth year of the Yuankang reign era, he sat upright and passed away. His disciples cremated him according to the customs of the realm. It burned for successive days, yet the corpse still sat within the fire, never turning to ashes. Thereupon, they moved it back into the stone chamber.
