> The monk Weiying's origins are not clearly known. He was skilled in judging character by voice and appearance, and also understood mantic arts. The literatus Lu Binyu sat for the jinshi examination and interacted with him in the capital. Whatever small matter Weiying spoke of was always verified. In the spring of the second year of Baoli, Binyu intended to give up on the examination and return to Wu, informing Weiying of his plans for departure. Ying detained him for a night. The next morning, he said to Binyu, "Next year your name will be made; you need not return. Just seek recommendation and sponsorship from Jingzhao, and you will surely be in the highest tier." Binyu said, "I have three times sought recommendation from Jingzhao and never once succeeded. This year's matter seems especially difficult." Ying said, "Not so. For your name to be established, you must be recommended by Jingzhao; nowhere else will do. If on the sixth day of the seventh month you eat aquatic creatures, the special tier and passing the examination will be certain." Binyu then wrote this on the window of his house in Jinchang Ward, examining it daily. Several months later, waiting for an official outside the north gate of Jinggong Ward, he happened to meet an imperial court guest, so he turned back to rest at the lodge of his grand-nephew Wenli. When he entered, Wenli welcomed him joyfully, saying, "Earlier, someone gave me a pair of carps. I was just waiting for you, sir, to cook them." Binyu was fond of fish by nature, and simply ordered a soup to be made, consuming all of it when it arrived. A later day, on looking at the characters written on his window frame, he realized it was indeed the sixth day of the seventh month. He hurriedly ordered his carriage to visit Weiying, and said deceitfully, "I am going to travel to Puguan, and have therefore come to bid farewell." Ying laughed and said, "You have already eaten the aquatic creatures; why travel to Puguan?" Binyu believed him deeply. He thereupon sought recommendation from the Jingzhao Superior Prefecture and indeed attained the special tier. The next year, after finishing the examination at the Department of State Affairs, he visited Weiying again. Ying said, "You have already passed, but your rank on the roster is not very high; you will be outside the top fifteen. The top graduate is named Li He, who drags his feet." At that time, there was a student of the Imperial Academy named Zhu Qiu, whom contemporary opinion held would pass, but whose name, submitted by the supervisors, did not appear on the roster of passes. Binyu then asked, "Is there no one with the surname Zhu?" Ying said, "Among the thirty-three people, there is none with the surname Zhu." At that time, it was the twenty-fourth day of the first month. Binyu told this to Congfu, and Fu and Shi He wrote it on the wall. More than a month later, the roster was released. The top graduate was Li He. Binyu's name was sixteenth, and there were indeed thirty-three people. Weiying also said to Binyu, "After your name is established, you will receive an official salary in the region of Wu and Yue. There is an affair that will happen very swiftly." Binyu later served as a retainer in Yue, and died suddenly after half a year.
