> The monk Daolong of Wuzhou wandered like a cloud in various regions and lodged at Nengren Monastery in Jiangzhou. Because his actions were erratic, people only called him the Mad Preceptor. In the first year of the Shaoxing era, wandering on alms-rounds, he reached Ruichang and stayed overnight at Tianhua Monastery. At night, a man was weeping and said, 'This disciple was unfortunate and during his lifetime committed extensive evil deeds; now I have fallen into a bovine body. A tail grows on my head, and my appearance is strange and ugly. I pray that the master will be compassionate, repent on my behalf, and cause me to escape this suffering.' The next day \[Daolong\] went to the house of the Tang family in Ruoshan. Men and women of the whole household all came out to pay homage. They addressed him, saying, 'The day before yesterday our cow gave birth to an extremely bizarre calf: its tail grows on its head. We fear it may bring disaster to our humble family. We pray that the preceptor will elucidate this karmic condition to wash away its past faults.' Shortly afterwards, they drove the cow forward; it shook its head and wagged its tail as if begging for pity. Long shouted, 'You performed deeds in the past, and today they are hard to escape! Although you have received this form, how is your fundamental nature different? Have you not heard Preceptor Guishan instruction to the assembly: "Within it there is an echo; inside the phrase is concealed the workings \[of reality\]. If you understand here, then you will see the numinous light radiating and illuminating the ten directions; buddhas and sentient beings are fundamentally of one identical substance"? Lest you do not yet understand, I shall speak a verse for you.' After the cow received the prophecy, it followed Long back to the monastery. Those who watched were numbered in the thousands. Seeing people, the cow bowed its head and would not eat, as if looking ashamed. On New Year's Eve it suddenly died. Long dreamt that it came to thank him. He then led the assembly to light torches and cremate it.
