### [10.12](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2067.10.12)

> Shi Tanyun was a native of Dingzhou, seventy years of age. During the upheavals and chaos at the end of the Sui, he secluded himself on Mount Bigan in Lishi. He constantly recited the Lotus Sūtra and wished to copy the sūtra, but there was no one who shared his aspiration. Years passed in this way. Suddenly, a scribe arrived out of nowhere, saying that he could practice whatever purifications were desired. Thereupon, early in the morning after finishing his meal, \[the scribe\] would bathe, put on pure clothes, receive the eight precepts, hold incense in his mouth, burn incense, and silently transcribe the text, only coming out when dusk fell. The next day was again like the first, and he never complained of fatigue. When the sūtra was finished copying, \[Tanyun\] reverently presented it in accordance with the rules and saw \[the scribe\] out the door; in an instant, he was nowhere to be seen. Even as to its mounting and ornamentation, it was entirely in accordance with the correct rules.
>
> Tanyun maintained and read it, wrapping it in seven layers of cloth; for each layer, he washed his hands with scented water each time, never neglecting this for a moment. Later, encountering barbarian raiders, he placed the sūtra in a box and set it on a high cliff. After a year, when the raiders were quelled, he went to look for it but could not find it. Searching anxiously and thoroughly, he finally retrieved it beneath the cliff: the box and the wrapping cloth were rotten and decayed, but when he examined the sūtra, it was as fresh and pristine as before.
