> Śramaṇa Zhiyou was a native of Jiangzhou; it is not known from what clan he came. From childhood he was solemn and reverent, dwelling uprightly without mingling with worldly folk. Leaving the secular world at an early age, he had an elegant love for this scripture, reciting and upholding it day and night, virtually without a wasted day. When the Chen dynasty entered the Pass, he dwelt at Baoyun Temple in Huayuan County. Although he had moved from the south to the north, this practice never diminished. Whenever he recited the sūtra, he would hold an incense burner with closed eyes, the incense smoke never ceasing. Over forty-two years in total, his recitations approached fifty thousand times. The wash basin he used was always overflowing. In the eighth year of the Zhenguan era (634), he died sitting without illness at the temple where he resided, at the age of seventy-two. On the day he was about to die, heavenly music came to welcome him, echoing abundantly for a long time in the air outside his room. There was also a fragrant scent like a cloud that filled the courtyard and buildings; people inside could not see one another, and only after a long while did it disperse. His disciple Dezang, together with over a thousand local gentry and commoners, moved his coffin to Mount Anju in the southeast and sat his corpse beneath a tree. When they went to look the next morning, no one knew where it was.
