> The ninth fascicle of the Chronicle states: 'Fayan was of the Zhang clan of Qinghe. In the seventh year of the Dajian era of the Chen, he served the Wise One at Tiantai and received the essentials of dhyāna. He sat silently amidst the forest and did not reside in rooms. He often entered samādhi for seven days before arising. The Wise One confirmed it for him, saying: "As you have described, this is the sign of the second contemplation in the eight liberations (aṣṭa-vimokṣa)." Mountain spirits repeatedly harassed and tested him, but he remained tranquil and unmoved. Exclusively cultivating dhyāna methods, for more than thirty years he constantly sat and did not lie down. On the last day of the second month in the seventh year of the Daye era of the Sui, he passed away seated cross-legged at Guoqing \[Temple\].'
