> Shi Fazong was a native of Linhai. When young he was fond of hunting. Once in Shan, he encountered and shot a pregnant doe, causing her to miscarry. Holding the arrow in her mouth, the mother doe still approached the ground to lick her fawn. Fazong then repented and had an awakening, knowing that clinging to life and loving one's offspring is shared by all sentient beings. Thereupon he broke his bow, snapped his arrows, went forth from the household life, and practiced the path. He always sustained himself by begging for food, observed the rule of taking a single meal, and ate bitter vegetables throughout the six periods of the day to repent his past transgressions. He recited the Lotus Sūtra and the Vimalakīrti. He frequently mounted a terrace to chant and recite, the resonance being heard far and wide. The gentry and commoners who received the refuges and precepts from him numbered more than three thousand. He then expanded his dwelling into a vihāra, naming it Fahuatai after his recitation. From time to time there was extraordinary light, turning the dark night into day, and people all marvelled at it. It is not known where Fazong ended his days. The terrace temple still exists today; if any sick persons lodge within it, pray, and maintain mindfulness, they immediately recover.
