Having renounced the household in his youth, he recited the Lotus Sūtra until he was fluent, but took pride in it as his achievement. Stricken with the suffering of a febrile illness, his teeth all fell out. He then put an end to his pride, and with a mind of wisdom recited \[the sūtra\] for a full summer retreat. He dreamt that a celestial youth arrived, pointed to his gums with a willow branch, and said: "You have concentrated your mind on reciting the sūtra; your fallen teeth will grow back as they originally were. When you attain the Way in the future, your teeth will be white and fine-set." Having spoken, \[the youth vanished and\] he woke from the dream; his mouth was filled with teeth. Later he moved to live in a quiet room, and as he recited the sūtra facing the window, food and drink naturally appeared before his desk. Just as he finished eating, for the next seven days he was as though full and sated, and his body was plump and well-nourished like this. His sympathetic resonances and supreme benefits were very numerous. At the age of eighty-nine he died; fragrance filled the room, and music was heard in the sky.
