> Zhonggui was by nature filial and fraternal, and was respected in his home commandery. At the age of seventeen his deportment was especially outstanding, and he served as Magistrate of Mengyang. His father, Lian, took up residence in Ziyang, and subsequently retired due to old age. During the Wude era, his father fell ill; Zhonggui did not take off his cap and belt while nursing him. After a long time his father passed away. Sending away his wife and concubines, he built a hut beside the grave. He had deep faith in the Buddha's teachings and recited the Lotus Sūtra. By day he carried earth to raise the burial mound, and by night he devoted himself to reciting the sūtra, unwearied in his sincere devotion. For three whole years he did not return home. Once, a tiger came before his hut at night and crouched down to listen to the sūtra, remaining there for a long time without departing. Gui held a proper mindfulness, saying: "I do not wish for wild beasts to press close." The tiger thereupon arose and departed. The next morning, seventy-two stalks of lingzhi mushrooms were found growing around the tomb. Those facing the front of the mound stood in neat rows as if planted by human hands; all had scarlet stems and purple caps, with caps five inches across, exhibiting an extraordinary radiance and color. The neighbors reported this to the prefecture and county. At that time, Zheng Junchang was the Inspector and Shuo Yu was the Vice-Governor; they went together to the grave site to inspect it. Suddenly a bird, resembling a duck, flew over clutching a pair of carp, each about a foot long. It landed before Junchang, laid the fish on the ground, and flew away. Junchang and the others sighed in profound admiration. Gathering the lingzhi, they presented a memorial to the throne, and an imperial decree was issued to confer honors upon his village gate. (Zhonggui's younger brother Xiaosui, who was an Assistant Minister of the Court of Judicature and Revision, recounted this in person. People of Lüzhou also said the same thing.)
