> The nun Miaofa, secular surname Li, was a native of Jingzhao. Her mother, née Min, initially dreamed of an Indian monk holding three stalks of lotus flowers, who handed them to her and said, "I give you good seed; care for it well." Because of this, she became pregnant. When she gave birth, she named the child Lianhua (Lotus). As she grew older, she took no pleasure in family life and wished to leave secular life. When she was twelve, her elder sister taught her the Lotus Sūtra. She read the text as if she had studied it in a past life, chanting eight sheets a day, and before a month had passed, she had completely chanted the entire scripture. People praised her virtue and named her Miaofa (Wondrous Dharma). Thereupon before the Buddha, she burned incense and made a vow to chant and recite it eight thousand times, and also to chant and master the Amitārtha-sūtra and the Samantabhadra Contemplation Sūtra. Was this not indeed the fulfillment of the dream of the three stalks? When she chanted in the quiet of the night, her voice reached over a hundred li away; heard near and far, its volume seemed neither louder nor softer. After entering the Way, her integrity grew ever firmer. Near her death, she told the assembly, "Samantabhadra has appeared before me to comfort my heart. All my masters and friends have come to welcome me, and I am about to be reborn in the Pure Land." Having spoken, she passed away. Three stalks of white lotuses grew from her seat, just as when growing in a pond, and the flowers did not wither or fall for seven days. Those who saw it regarded it as a miraculous omen.
