> Zhu Changshu's ancestors were originally people of the Western Regions. For generations they possessed wealth and were an affluent family. In the Yuankang era of the Jin dynasty, they moved inland to Luoyang. Changshu served the Dharma with exquisite sincerity, and was particularly fond of reciting the Avalokiteśvara Sūtra. Later, a fire broke out in the neighborhood. Changshu's house was entirely thatched with straw and happened to be directly downwind. He reasoned to himself that the fire was already closing in, and that even if he moved his goods out, very few would be saved. He therefore ordered his family not to carry anything out, nor did any of them pour water to extinguish the flames; he simply recited the sūtra with the utmost sincerity. After a short while, the fire burned down his neighbor's house, separated from Changshu's by only a fence, but the wind suddenly turned back on its own, and the fire stopped right at the eaves of his house. At the time, everyone regarded this as miraculous. In the village were four or five reckless, deceitful youths who mocked it together, saying, "The wind happened to turn on its own; what divine power could there be in this? When an evening is clear and dry, we should set fire to his house; if he can keep it from burning, only then will it count." Later, the ground was extremely dry and parched, and a swift wind arose. The band of youths secretly tied torches together and threw them onto his roof; three times they threw them, and three times they were extinguished. They were greatly terrified and fled back to their homes. The following morning, they led one another to Changshu's house, related what had happened the previous night, and bowed their heads to the ground in apology. Changshu replied, "I have no divine power at all; I merely recited and recollected Avalokiteśvara. This must have been the protection of that awe-inspiring spirit. You gentlemen need only purify your minds and turn to faith." From then on, all the neighbors and villagers held him in extraordinary respect. (Fayuan, fascicle 23).
