Various medicines were applied, yet in the end he did not recover; he prayed to the celestial and terrestrial deities, yet he was still not cured. Dharma Master Dharmakṣema, styled the Bodhisattva Yibole, was traveling and converting across the Congling Mountains and arrived in Hexi. When the great king heard that the śramaṇa had arrived, he inquired about curing his illness. Dharmakṣema replied, "The great king's illness cannot be healed by the various medicines of India. There is only a wondrous medicine, whose name is the 'Universal Gate of the Wondrous Dharma'; if you have it recited in revolving recitation, \[you will be healed\]." The king strictly complied with the instruction and ordered that it be read for him, whereupon his illness was completely removed and cured. From this he aroused a mind of deep reverence, and personally excerpted the single chapter on Avalokiteśvara to form a separate fascicle.
