A gaṇḍī was sounded. One person among the group was a merchant leader; he asked: "What is taking place?" Someone answered, saying: "They are lecturing on the Lotus Sūtra." One person urged his companions, but they did not dare to follow along. He alone went forward to participate in the assembly. When the lecture ended, he withdrew from the seat and dispersed, and finally entered the ocean. Seeking no wealth, they suddenly encountered a fierce wind; the ship capsized and all the people died, with only this one person surviving. That night, an instructional dream said: "You heard the lecture on the 'Life Span of the Tathāgata' chapter of the Lotus Sūtra; by virtue of this merit, you were spared the mortal disaster." That one person at that time was none other than the present Devadatta. Those who drowned were Kokālika, Añgulimāla, and others.
