> Although Emperor Wen of Sui’s Empress lived in the imperial palace, she deeply loathed the female body and recited \[the name of\] the Western Pure Land daily. When her end drew near, a miraculous fragrance filled the palace, arriving from the sky. Emperor Wen asked Jātisena, “What kind of auspicious sign is this?” \[Jātisena replied,\] “In the west there is a Buddha named Amitābha. The Empress’s karma is lofty, and her spirit is born in that land; therefore there is this auspicious sign.”
