> Zhang Zhongkui was a native of Tongzhou whose occupation was selling chickens. In the ninth year of Yonghui, when approaching death, he saw a flock of chickens gather south of his house. Suddenly he saw a man dressed in scarlet and black garments driving the chickens and shouting, 'Peck! Peck!' The chickens flew up four times and pecked at both of his eyes, so that blood flowed onto the bed. At the You hour, he met the buddhamanasikāra monk Hongdao of Shanguang Monastery, who had him set out a sacred image and recite 'Amitābha Buddha.' Suddenly there was a miraculous fragrance, and he quietly passed away.
