> Shi Tanhong was a native of Huanglong, or, as some say, of Gaoyou in Guangling. During the Yongchu reign-era of the Song dynasty, he traveled south to Panyu and stayed at Tai Monastery. Later he went to Xianshan Monastery in Jiaozhi. Outside of offering incense and fire, he engaged in nothing else. He chanted the Amitāyus Sūtra and the Contemplation Sūtra times beyond count. Hong often thought, “A single body has myriad distractions, and correct mindfulness is hard to preserve; one should take advantage of correct mindfulness to see Amitābha early.” For this reason, he gathered firewood in a mountain valley to make a pyre. One day, he secretly entered the firewood and stated aloud, “I pray to cast off this retribution body and swiftly behold the golden countenance, never falling into the various realms of existence within the three realms.” Thereupon he set fire to it. His disciples chased after him, reached him, and carried him back to the monastery. However, the burned half of his body was already charred and ulcerated; yet before a month had passed, the wounds completely healed. The next day, the local villagers held a solemn great assembly, and the entire monastery attended. On that day, Hong again went into the rocky valley, piled up firewood, and burned himself. When the villagers ran to save him, Hong had already passed away. They then added more firewood and stoked the flames, which were consumed only after the sun moved. His disciples gathered his remaining bones and obtained several hundred relics (śarīra); striking them with stones, sparks and flames immediately burst forth, yet in the end they showed no crack. The next day, someone saw Hong's body colored golden yellow, riding a golden deer and heading west with great haste. When asked, he did not reply; when asked again, he merely raised one hand, pointing toward the west. Someone pressed on and pursued him, but the distance between them grew ever wider, and in the end could not be overtaken.
