> Huaigan of the Tang resided at Qianfu Monastery in Chang'an. He entered the sanctuary for buddhamanasikāra, but after three weeks he saw no spiritual omens. Regretting his deep hindrances, he wished to end his life by fasting. Great Master Shandao did not permit it, urging him to be vigorous and devout for three years. Gan acted according to his instructions. Later, he saw the Buddha's golden body and jade-like ūrṇā, and attained buddhānusmṛti-samādhi. He composed the Treatise Resolving Doubts in seven fascicles. Facing death, he joined his palms and said: 'The Buddha has come to welcome me,' and thereupon died.
