> Xizhan of the Song was a native of Shanyin. In his youth he was a Confucian scholar, but he suddenly grew weary of the world and underwent pravrajyā. Together with practitioner Ying, he built a Hall of the Buddha of Immeasurable Life at Ruandu, devoting himself exclusively to cultivating pure karma. When sitting, he never turned his back to the west. After a long time, he constantly saw the forms of the Buddha and the two bodhisattvas. One evening, facing the west in buddhamanasikāra, he sat upright, entered deep stillness, formed a mudrā, and passed away.
