> Appraisal: Keeping a flute to amuse himself was merely an ancient's way of marking the cause of his awakening, thereby using it to perform Buddha-work. Master Juzhi obtained the 'one finger Chan' of Tianlong and held up a finger for the rest of his life; Elder Duan saw someone performing with a toy lion to illuminate the ground of his mind and constantly wore multicolored clothes; and someone who misread the Śūraṅgama did not correct the phrasing—these are all of this kind. Let wild, reckless, and self-indulgent people beware of using this as an excuse.
