> Buddhabhadra of the Jin—here translated as Juexian ("Awakened Virtue")—was a native of Kapilavastu and a descendant of King Amṛtodana. At the age of sixteen he studied the various sūtras extensively, penetrating deeply into dhyāna and vinaya. When the śramaṇa Zhiyan of the Yao Qin went to the Western Regions, he invited the Master to reach Chang'an, where he expounded the Dharma in the Eastern Palace and debated high and low with Master Kumārajīva. Later, because of his divination concerning ships on the sea, he suffered expulsion. He entered Mount Lu, joined Master Yuan's Lotus Society, and translated various sūtras such as the Sūtra on the Samādhi of Contemplating the Buddha. In the sixth year of the Yuanjia era of the Song, he transformed while engaged in buddhamanasikāra.
