> Zhang Quan of the Jin dynasty was a clan nephew of \[Zhang\] Ye. He was lofty, untrammeled, and fond of learning; even while plowing and hoeing he never let go of the scriptures. Repeatedly summoned, he did not accept. Yu Yue, seeing his poverty, recommended him as Magistrate of Xunyang. \[Quan\] laughed and said, 'The ancients found peace in a room just big enough for their knees; bending one's will to take an official salary—what honor is there in that?' Thereupon he entered Mount Lu, relied upon Master \[Hui\]yuan's Lotus Society, and investigated the inner scriptures, gaining many awakenings. In the first year of the Jingping reign of the Song dynasty, without illness, he faced west, practiced buddhamanasikāra, lay down peacefully, and passed away.
